Determiner, atau disebut juga limiting adjective, adalah kata yang digunakan untuk merujuk suatu kata benda (noun). Fungsinya adalah untuk memodifikasi noun seperti fungsi adjective pada umumnya. Determiner dapat juga diartikan “kata penentu” karena fungsinya yang membuat suatu noun menjadi lebih spesifik.
Berikut beberapa contoh dari determiner:
- the book
- a pen
- my mom
- which ball
- our school
Determiner terletak pada awal noun phrase dan hanya dapat merujuk pada sesuatu yang umum atau spesifik, namun tidak dapat sekaligus keduanya. Sehingga determiner biasa dibagi menjadi dua jenis yaitu: General determiner dan Specific determiner.
1) General Determiner
General Determiner digunakan untuk membicarakan hal-hal umum atau yang belum diketahui oleh pendengar atau pembaca. Determiner yang bersifat umum seperti:
1. Indefinite article (Artikel tidak tentu): a, an, any, another, other, what, whatever
- I need a pen to do the task
- We can’t believe any Information about that
2. Quantifiers (Ukuran): all, few, many, some
- Many birds migrates every year.
- You have to eat some food.
2) Specific Determiner
Specific Determiner digunakan ketika kita tahu bahwa pendengar atau pembaca juga tahu benda yang kita rujuk. Determiner yang bersifat spesifik yaitu:
1. Definite article (Artikel pasti): the
- Can you read the book for me, please?
- I don’t think I can pass the driving test.
2. Possesives (Kepemilikan/kepunyaan): me, your, her, his, its, our, their, whose
- Your speech is amazing.
- Whose jacket is that?
3. Demonstratives (Penunjuk): that, this, those, these
- I want to take these cute ornaments home.
- That puppy is sick.
4. Interrogatives (Pertanyaan): which
- Which fruit is the best for dessert?
- Which one of you want to volunteer?
