“There is” dan “There are” Penjelasan dan Contoh Kalimat

Jika dilihat di kamus, atau di aplikasi seperti Google translate, “there is” dan “there are” berarti “ada”. Tapi terkadang masih ada beberapa orang yang belum memahami cara penggunaannya. Jadi pada artikel ini, kita akan membahas bagaimana cara menggunakan “there is” dan “there are” serta contoh-contoh kalimatnya.

1. Menggunakan “there is”

“there is” berarti “ada”. Dalam penggunaannya, “there is” selalu diikuti oleh kata benda tunggal atau singular noun. Bisa juga dikatakan bahwa “there is” digunakan untuk noun yang jumlahnya hanya satu.

Umumnya, noun yang berbentuk singular akan diikuti oleh artikel “a” atau “an”. Tapi ada juga yang menggunakan kata “one” sebelum singular noun. 
Contohnya seperti: a book, a table, an hour, one chance, one book, an action.

Contoh kalimat yang menggunakan “there is” seperti:

1. There is a big tree in the backyard
2. There is one set of cleaning tools in the kitchen
3. There is a dress for your party on shelf
4. There is a suitable clothes for you there
5. There is an apple inside the box

Dalam kalimat negatif, tinggal menambahkan kata “not” setelah “is”. Contohnya seperti:

1. There is not a big tree in the backyard
2. There is not one set of cleaning tools in the kitchen
3. There is not a dress for your party on shelf

Sedangkan pada kalimat interogatif, kata “is” akan dipindahkan ke depan kalimat. Contohnya seperti:

1. Is there a big tree in the backyard?
2. Is there one set of cleaning tools in the kitchen?
3. Is there a dress for your party on shelf?

2. Menggunakan “there are”

“there are” berarti ada. Dalam penggunaannya, “there are” selalu diikuti oleh plural noun atau kata benda jamak. Noun yang berbentuk plural adalah noun yang jumlahnya lebih dari satu.

Noun yang bersifat jamak umumnya akan diikuti oleh akhiran -s atau -es sehingga sering juga disebut sebagai noun+s/es.
Contoh plural noun seperti: books, pencils, cars, axes, matches.

Tetapi, ada juga noun yang berbentuk plural tanpa ditambahkan akhiran –s atau -es. 
Contohnya seperti: oxen, deer, geese, mice, childre, men, women.

Contoh kalimat yang menggunakan “there are” seperti:

1. There are some children in the arena
2. There are two paintings in my room
3. I think there are ten boxes on the table
4. There are some books in my bookshelf
5. There are only three kinds of flowers in her garden

Dalam kalimat negatif, tinggal menambahkan kata “not” setelah “are”. Contohnya seperti:

1. There are not some children in the arena
2. There are not two paintings in my room
3. I think there are not ten boxes on the table

Sedangkan pada kalimat interogatif, kata “are” akan dipindahkan ke depan kalimat. Contohnya seperti:

1. Are there some children in the arena?
2. Are there two paintings in my room?
3. Are there ten boxes on the table?

3. Bentuk past dari “there is” dan “there are”

Tidak jauh berbeda dengan bentuk past tense pada umumnya, yaitu dengan cara mengganti “to be“-nya ke bentuk lampau. Sehingga “is” akan berubah menjadi “was” dan “are” akan menjadi “were”. 
Contohnya seperti:

1. There were some children in the arena
2. There were two paintings in my room
3. I think there were ten boxes on the table
4. There was a big tree in the backyard
5. There was one set of cleaning tools in the kitchen
6. There was a dress for your party on shelf
